Detox products are bullshit.
Save your dollars, get some sense.
Your body is a truly amazing machine. In about a thousand ways, your system does a very good job of protecting you from all the bad things you come into contact with everyday, by environment or ingestion.
We work too much, don’t sleep enough, and the stress of daily obligations to high demand people/families/jobs takes a real toll on our bodies. Every minute of everyday. And it ALL counts. Every beer, every doughnut, Diet Coke, and second meal taco bar, all of that crap adds up everything that is you today, whatever your particular ailment. It ALL counts. You put bad gas/oil in your car, what happens? It WILL run, right? But it will also break down much, much sooner. In order to understand true wellness , you must begin to understand the concept of ‘everything is everything’. In a quite literal sense. What you think, feel, believe, eat, surround yourself with, becomes YOU.
You truly are what you eat, stress and sleep (and other lifestyle factors).
So. How do you want to LIVE out this thing called ‘life’?
Well, obviously, no-one wants the bad things like cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, or any of the many other lethal, ugly things that in the twilight of our years, make us burdensome to our families and health care system. You WANT be a happy, vital healthy person until it’s time to shuffle off your mortal coil? Again, this choice is YOURS.
Okay, I am fully aware that those last sentences were a bit heavy.. My aim isn’t to guilt you…it’s to educate, and inspire. You are reading this because you want to know how to live a healthier life in the body you have. Truth is tough to take . But if you want the keys to a longer, healthier, more energized life, I’m going to tell you what I’ve gathered from the top minds in the field.
Like death and taxes, there isn’t any way around this. You live WELL, or you DON’T.
When the cooties are going around, do you go down? How long? Your immune systems’ strength will mean the difference between something that last two days or two weeks.
I’m about to give a brief explanation of the organs that actually DO detox us, so if you aren’t interested, skip down a bit.
Our body has two detox stars: the LIVER and KIDNEYS.
Let’s start with the liver, which serves more than 400 functions in our body. (don’t worry. I’m not going to list them all), mostly nutrient delivery and filtering.
Tiny red spots on your skin and mood irritability mean you need to clean it up a bit – and THAT you CAN do, (also without a complicated, pricey system).
The liver is the key to the use and storage of energy-rich molecules. It breaks down amino acids to release energy or store them as lipids (fats) or carbs for later.
One of our livers’ jobs are finding substances in the bloodstream that are foreign/ toxic / poisonous. These things occur daily just by breaking down the protein you eat. Once food has been broken down, and your blood has become enriched by vitamins and minerals, it heads to the liver, that then processes it into forms the body uses.
Bile (also created in the liver), carries away the excess back to the intestines so they can travel to your waste site otherwise know as an asshole. Bile also helps the body absorb fats it needs for energy.
The liver also stores the breakdown result of carbs called glycogen, which is like your super back-up fuel. Liver makes cholesterol, that our body NEEDS (there will be more on this elsewhere). The liver also helps with other things like blood clotting and breaking down the Advil into it’s active ingredient and rushing to that headache/backache/knee pain you keep having.
The kidneys work with the liver to figure the activities in our bodies through chemical messages.
Important stuff like blood pressure are all about the concentration between sodium and water in the blood. When the kidneys detect a decrease in blood flow, it sends an enzyme to the liver that then goes to the adrenals and makes something that makes the kidneys retain sodium and water. They also work together to stimulate the chemicals the liver needs to turn sunlight into vitamin D.
These are a few very basic descriptions of these two DETOX organs you own, right now, inside your body.
The liver and kidneys work together to detox you- every minute of everyday. That is their job.
You can keep them happy by doing some stuff, and NOT doing some stuff. You will decide what those things are. I will provide you with some tools you may use to assist these organs in doing that job. Easy stuff you already have in your kitchen, I guarantee it.
On an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, I drink water. As most of us know well, Water is one of the most useful things you can put in a body…….. I like to dress mine up a bit. I can squeeze some lemon before I head out, or I can make my super water that I put in one of those 32 oz travel thingies. Here are some options to super your water and how they will help your body out of that mess you’ve made of things.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Made by fermentation, acv main thing is acetic acid, which is a blood sugar helper (increases insulin sensitivity as well as an antibacterial agent.
- Lemon: A true super food, packed with vitamin C (30 mg
Soluble pectin fiber in lemons expand in your stomach, making you feel full, and improving gut health. Also slowing the digestion of sugar and starches. This will reduce blood sugar levels as well . But to get the benefit of the fiber you must eat the fruit, for the juice alone won’t do.
Citric acid may help kidney stones by increasing the amount you pee, and the ph levels in it,( so a hostile environment to stones). Lemons help improve iron absorption in plant foods, which is less easily absorbed than iron from animal sources. Vitamin c and citric acid help absorb iron from plant sources making lemons a must for vegetarians and vegans.
- Honey: A blend of sugar, trace enzymes, minerals vitamins and amino acids that has anti fungal antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Chose raw, unfiltered for best results. The cheap stuff will add corn syrup.
- Cinnamon: Anti inflammatory compounds relieves pain and stiffness in joints..boosts brain function on and helps control blood sugar. Soothe’s sore throats and coughs.
- Aloe Vera: Dual amazing here: supports healthy digestion, enhancing antioxidant support, supporting immune health, reducing toxins, increases nutrient absorption and soothing muscle and joint pain . Externally, it soothes burns and aches…..
- Turmeric: Or Curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric), one of the most studied nutrients in our modern age, has over a hundred potential effects throughout our system, (lots of data on this stuff, go to PubMed if you’re interested).
- Sea Salt: Minerals in sea salt , magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc and iodine are in their natural ratios and help keep the body’s electrolytes in balance.
Pure sea salt, evaporated from sea water contains approximately 80 essential elements and minerals, but are removed from standard table salt during a refining process.
The electrolyte balance in your body boosts transmission of information between brain and nerve cells, which influences heart rate, blood pressure and muscle tension.
Sea salt is one of my first go-to supplements whenever anyone around me begins to get sick.
- Cayenne Pepper: A little red powerhouse, cayenne offers us quite a bit of benefits for our bodies. It helps digestion by healing an upset stomach, slowing intestinal gas, and diarrhea. It improves circulation, and can help reverse blood clots.
